Marksbury Primary School benefits from PTA-led clean energy upgrade

The primary school has become more energy efficient following two recent initiatives. In April the school was installed with solar panels, and in 2024 it implemented an air-to-air heat pump system. These projects were spearheaded by the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) who secured funding for both.
The school installed a 10kW solar PV system with battery storage during the Easter holidays. This initiative was supported by the Glastonbury Community Fund and is predicted to save Marksbury more than £2,000 per year on energy bills, and reduce emissions by 2,234 tonnes over 20 years.
In 2024, the school’s PTA had also raised funds to replace the former heating system with a high-efficiency air-to-air heat pump system, helping Marksbury to become more energy efficient. This system supports a more environmentally responsible approach to heating, reducing energy consumption while providing comfort for staff and pupils.
Matt Jones, PTA member, said:
“It’s fantastic to have worked alongside the school to both make the buildings more sustainable but also involve the pupils in the whole process to understand the importance of clean and renewable energy”.
Mrs Amanda Trim, Head Teacher, said:
“We’re so grateful for the hard work of the PTA and having the heat pump system, which keeps the pupils and teachers comfortable, while supporting the school’s commitment to environmental responsibility. This has created valuable learning opportunities with pupils taking part in the thermal imaging survey and gaining a deeper understanding of renewables.”
The project has been made possible through the time, determination and fundraising efforts of the PTA, combined with generous support from local funds, organisations and community partners. The school would like to thank the following grant givers and supporters:
